80% Win Rate Not Equal To Profitability

Da-Costa Assumang

Imagine two traders:

Trader A wins 8 out of 10 trades — an impressive 80% win rate.
Trader B wins only 4 out of 10 — just 40%.

You might assume Trader A is more profitable. But what if Trader A makes $10 on each winning trade and loses $50 on each losing trade, while Trader B makes $100 when right and loses only $30 when wrong?

Suddenly, the 40% win-rate trader may be making more money.

The lesson? A high win rate doesn’t automatically mean a profitable trader.

Problem 1: Traders Obsess Over Winning Every Trade

Many traders feel that a losing trade means their strategy is failing.

Example:
You take 10 trades and win 5. You immediately think, “My strategy is only 50% accurate.”

Solution:

Focus on the overall performance of your strategy, not individual trades. Losses are part of trading.

Problem 2: Chasing a Higher Win Rate

Some traders move their Stop Loss closer or take profits too quickly just to increase their percentage of winning trades.

Example:
You risk $50 to make $20 because you want more winning trades. You win 7 out of 10 trades, but the 3 losses wipe out most of your gains.

Solution:

Balance win rate with Risk-to-Reward (RR). A 40–50% win rate can still be profitable with good risk management.

Problem 3: Confusing Win Rate With Profitability

A trader can have a 70% win rate and still lose money.

Imagine:

  • 7 wins × $20 = +$140
  • 3 losses × $60 = -$180
  • Overall result = -$40

The win rate looks great but the account is losing money.

Solution:

Track win rate + average win + average loss + RR + overall profitability.

The Real Goal

Don’t ask: How can I win more trades?

Ask: How can I make my winning trades larger than my losing trades while managing risk consistently?

A trader with a 50% win rate and 1:2 RR can potentially perform better than a trader with an 80% win rate and poor RR.

Final Takeaway

Win rate is only one piece of the trading puzzle.

Good Strategy + Risk Management + Discipline + Positive Expectancy = Long-Term Success

Don’t chase more wins. Chase better decisions.
